Cloth Diapers Again, and a giveaway.

I've been watching this blog for a while now, and they do a weekly give away of cloth diapers. Be sure to check out their store http://www.diaperjunction.com for great options and prices on diapers and accessories and more. This week's giveaway is particularly exciting to me.

After about a year and a half of searching for the perfect cloth diaper combo for me, and much wasted money later on diapers that didn't work out, I feel I have finally found the match.

The last fitted diapers I bought were the Bum Genius Bamboo and the Thirsties Fab Fitted. The Bum Genius were small and trim and very soft on the outside. The problem with them is that I think it is just bamboo around one of their basic microfiber inserts, and I do not like their microfiber inserts. If I were to have tried just those diapers, MAYBE I would say Bum Genius is OK. But I have tried many of their products and I have yet to be impressed. Somehow though, they seem to be the most popular and successful of all the diapers out there. I'd like to replace all their stuff with the GroBaby diapers at least. I haven't tried those long enough to know, but I think it is a much better one size diaper.

Now, the Thirsties Fab Fitted, that is a great diaper! It comes in fun colors, it's a decent price, it's very soft, fits wonderfully, dries fast, washes well, and absorbs a lot. After I decided this could finally be my winning fitted, I bought 6 more in different colors and I am loving diapering life. And how awesome is it that this weeks givaway is all about the Thristies company?

I also finally bought some pre-folds. I have read so much about cloth diapers and in my research have found many many moms who say pre-folds are their favorite, so I had to try them. Sure enough I do like them a lot, and not to mention all the other great uses they have if I should ever not use them as diapers. Of course, they do not have a tight, containing, fit like fitteds do, but they absorb very nicely, they wash and dry wonderfully, and I hear they pretty much last forever. The best part about the fitteds I guess would be the price.

As for the cover, I have a few different brands. I just bought the Thirsties duo to try. I know I like the Aristocrats Wool for overnight. My fave is the Stacinator Fleece, which no one seems to carry anymore. But, that diaper cover isn't waterproof, just resistant, still I have never had a leak with it. So I cannot say what the best cover is based on price or function yet.

My search will continue of course, but on the other hand this is a search while my son is almost out of diapers, the perfect match could be different for a newborn, or infant, we will see. My son is doing so well with potty training that I'm scared ha ha. I am so in love with cloth diapering. It fascinates me so much I cannot wait to have another child just so that I cloth diaper it. I might have to seek out Cloth Diapers Anonymous.

More Mold

I had already planned on taking out the trash and recycling first thing in the morning. The recycling can hadn't been cleaned in.... well ever haha, it has been two years. Sounds nasty, but it was just recycling so it wasn't that bad. Anyway, when I took out trash bag out from the trash can I picked up the empty bag on the bottom of the can and found another horrifying display of mold growing.

Ew! My trash bags never tear so how in the world did mold start growing down in there? However it did, I had to clean both cans now. Yep, most can assume my next move. I put both cans in the front yard, poured in about 16 OZ of bleach each and then filled them half way with water. I let them soak for an hour and then I dumped them in the super dry dirt bed we call our front yard. Followed by that was a super wash down in and out with my handy dandy Trader Joe's castile soap to get them fresh and clean all over. Once they were wiped dry I sprinkled some lovely borax powder in the bottoms and I placed them back in the house, clean, and smelling nice.

I know the mold is growing like crazy right now because it is hot and humid summertime, but I still do not like it, and together with bleach I will combat all the mold in this house.

Mold Bath

Beating yourself up mentally is never a good thing. Also, life gets hectic quite often when you have a toddler and a husband. Yet still, I cannot get over the disgust I felt when I think about the bath mat I lay in the bottom of the tub every night when my son takes his bath.

Granted, we have had this mat about a year, but it gave us signs before. After a couple months of use I would find tiny dark spots on the top of it and I knew it was time to give it a bleach bath, which always cured the problem. I know I have checked the bottom of it as well during those times, and I never noticed anything too bad. Tonight however, something prompted me to turn the mat over (even though there were no tiny dots on the top) and I found a horrifying display of mold growing underneath it, in and around the suction cups.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am clean freak. What they do not know is how much I freak out over mold. I worry too much about all the sickness that can come from it. I even throw out all my sons bath toys the moment they get moldy. Honestly, it's a fear I don't look to rid myself of. I like having this fear, my family stays clean and healthy this way.

I promptly gave it a strong bleach bath and cleared the problem up. It was also time to scrub down the tub anyway to get rid of the soap scum and grim that accumulates every month in our old shower. I look back at my tub now, proud, that it is entirely cleaned and bacteria free. This is the best time of month for me.

I did learn though, that instead of hanging the mat over the side of the tub, suction cups down, I should hang it suction cups up and allow more air to pass through it. This I will remember to do to prevent any further nightmares of bathing my son with such filth and disgust.

As much as I endorse going as green as possible, I always say, "Buy BLEACH people!" it is the one nasty chemical product I cannot live without. And I keep it high up and far away from my sons reach.
