Old Chicken

After about a week indoors to help keep my son and myself as healthy as possible through the sickness, I awoke this morning very ready to get out and do something. I started to get ready as soon as we got up. I usually let him run around the house for 30-45 minutes before breakfast so he can fully wake up. During this time I got myself ready.

I was in the middle of straightening my hair when my son walks into the bathroom and says, "Hi!". I look down to find him happily munching away at a chicken nugget. I hadn't given him chicken nuggets for at least two days!!!

There weren't any ants or mold on the thing so I just let him eat it. Who would stop a baby from actually eating on their own right? I knew the thing wasn't going to hurt him. So, he ate it. He's been fine from eating it. And I learned to pay better attention when I give him food on the go, he might not always be the good little boy who eats all his food that I have been thinking he is.

The Final Verdict

It was a total of three days of fever, and a max temperature of 103.1. After a talk with my son's doctor we found out that there wasn't too much to be worried about yet and that I should just keep doing what I was doing to take care of him. (Lukewarm baths, alternating Motrin and Tylenol, and keeping him hydrated) I was informed to look out for signs of trouble in which I would want to bring him in. (extreme lethargy, dehydration, won't wake up, fever won't respond to any treatment.)

We waited it out one more day and he woke up fresh and new. He's been great since. I had developed the start of a sore throat myself, but I took Airborne and got lots of rest and it never developed into anything.

So we made it through one of his scariest sicknesses, yet we are still lucky enough to say he has only been sick three times in his life. We will keep doing what we do to keep him strong and healthy.

98 Degrees and Rising

I sit here in the quiet of the night wondering what the hours ahead will bring. For about 34 hours now my son has had a high fever ranging from 101.4 to 102.7. I've been alternating Motrin and Tylenol, along with lukewarm baths and we have been keeping it below 103. This afternoon he was doing great and his fever went away for a few hours so I started to think we had made it through the worst of it all. Then at about 8pm it shot back up and I got him ready for bed.

So I am wondering. He got a minor cough the day before all this fever and it is still there. He has a very minor stuffy/runny nose. He is irritable and seems achy. He drools a lot and seems to not be swallowing or drinking/eating much. It sounds like the flu. But today we also thought we saw a sore in his mouth. Tomorrow morning, if he doesn't look better we are going straight to the doctor to try and figure out what is going on with him, in case there is anything serious effecting him. Until then, I will wait these hours and watch him, listen to him, and feel his body, to be sure everything stays at normal levels.

Update soon.....

Unwanted Advice

It's one of those mysteries of the universe. Every parent (that I know of) has been around that person who just feels they know better than you when it comes to your child. They know what your child should and should not do, say, or eat, and they proceed to "teach" you these things as well. And the kicker is... these people usually do not have any children of their own.

Maybe it is a friend, maybe it is a family member, I'm sure many of them are complete strangers. Yet, they are all out there, waiting to teach you how to raise your child since they know better than you do as their parent right?

I know I sound bitter, it's just really hard to deal with sometimes. Especially when these people are on the Husbands side of life and saying what I felt might cause big drama. I don't take kindly to anyone tell me what to do with my son, and it is far worse if that someone doesn't even have the slightest clue of what it's really like to raise children.

If you notice the way our son acts you will see we are doing a wonderful job with him. He is extremely happy, amazingly smart, super sweet, and so easy going. To us he is perfect. The only thing I am worried about is that he will be there every time I speak my mind to someone and he will grow up to be so outspoken people are intimidated by him. But that is a risk I am very willing to take.

Inevitable Future

I was having a great night. After getting a speedy head start on my nightly chores I sent my little sweetheart to bed a little early. Feeling lovely about my extra amount of free time for the night I decided to jump right in and take a quick shower so I could spend as much time as possible watching the final season of "Sex in the City" which I had worked almost two weeks for by watching all the other seasons.

The shower felt so amazing after a hot, sweaty day of uncomfortable clothes. Feeling completely refreshed I wrapped my hair in a purple "turbie twist" towel and stepped out to greet my kittens. (Which have to be locked up at night to prevent all night playtime that wakes us all)

*fast forward 3 minutes*

I stood in front of the mirror, still talking to my cats, turbie twist still on my head, now wearing some Mickey Mouse capri pajamas and an oversize t-shirt. The final step of my shower routine was to clear out the remains of my mascara from around my eyes. The fog was still covering the whole mirror, so I reached for the squeegee to wipe it away. The face that I saw staring back at me was one I wasn't expecting, but totally should have. I have gotten older no doubt. Looking back at me was the face of.....

My mother.

Making New Friends. Or not?

Certain various time in my life I have fallen into moods in which I feel I try to hard to be someones friend and then I decide to stop trying for a while. Being one who values myself enough to not beg anyone for the time of day I have quite unexpectedly run into this problem far more than I wish to. Although, I think I might finally be learning. Or not?

Going to the park with my son is something amazing to experience. Children have no problem whatsoever making friends. (well, most I should say) They just see a kid and start a conversation, or even just start playing a game no questions asked. Often, this friendship lasts for a while. I got to thinking that since the parents are there with their children, and since our kids might like each other, then quite possibly I too could make friends. It seems to be much more complex than that with adults.

I have been to many great public outings with my son in which we are both surrounded by many potential friends. Now, my son is very young still so he isn't too interested in actually playing with other kids, the other kids like to run amok and be mean to him. That is problem one. Weeding out the parents who don't pay any attention to their beast children greatly reduces my number of potential friends. Second thing that seems to lower my chances of a friendship is that so many parents around me seem to be so full of themselves and so pretentious. I just don't see why their rich, snotty, spoiled asses cannot accept the fact that many great people in the world just don't have a lot of money, and more than that, don't enroll their kids in so many activities that there is no allotted time for parent child interacting. Money I may not have, but love and respect I do.

Then comes the problem of when you do meet a person, who seems like the one. This person may share all your beliefs, all your morals, all your interests and have "Best Buddy" written all over them. Then you get stood up. Who knows, maybe something went wrong. In my current situation I just have had enough of trying so hard to be someones friend, or trying too hard to be liked.

What we should be doing is being our true selves. If this bothers anyone at all, then you don't want to be around those people. After all... who wants to be around anyone you have to be fake with? If you feel you try too hard with a person, try not to worry or care for a while and see if the care and concern is reciprocated. If not, you might want to re-evaluate your relationship. If it is, then maybe you can rekindle what you two once had and therefore stop worrying about making new "friends".

Adult Teething

As a mother I am aware of the symptoms that come along with having a baby who is teething. Due to the pain of a tooth pushing through their unbroken gums they may end up with sleep difficulties, loss of appetite, irritability and fussiness. Tough things to deal with, especially when they aren’t able to tell you what is wrong and how you can make it better. So, you end up playing a guessing game. What I never imagined was that maybe adults go through it also.

This last year has been a tough one for my husband and I. Many arguments have gone on which ultimately confused both of us. We both end up feeling as if the other is completely out of their mind, and then we argue about that. We have tried just about everything we can think of to get back to the happiness we had before our son was born. We talked things out, we compromised, we spent time apart, we spent more time together, etc etc. At a time when I began to think that maybe we just didn’t have anything in common any longer he brought an amazing discovery to my attention.

My husband officially had part of his first wisdom tooth pop through. Since he is 24 years old I never gave it a through in the past, I thought he had told me his already grew in. It’s a very small corner of the tooth, but nonetheless, a part of tooth. Which can only mean he has been teething right? I began to wonder if maybe the same symptoms babies get can apply to adults as well.

I myself have been feeling my wisdom teeth coming in, and I know the pain can make me irritable. In fact I have been known to use my sons teething medication to ease the discomfort. When I was 12 I had an x-ray done of my mouth before the braces were to be put on. At that time we discovered that I had 4 wisdom teeth growing in completely horizontal! A concern, yet they said they would wait until after the braces to remove them. That day never came for one too many reasons and here I sit at 23 years old wondering if they have been the cause of my 4 year long streak of debilitating headaches.

Maybe it is possible that his, or my own teething have been causing us problems and arguments. The chances are slim though and in fact I may just be looking for a simple reason as to why we have had issues. Most likely it is just that we are two people who changed our lives by moving in together and having a baby all in the same year. People grow and change and have to learn to live together constantly. However, it has gotten me to seriously consider going in to have my wisdom teeth pulled so at least I’d know for sure if they are what causes my headaches or not.

Soaking Kids in Bleach?

This article on BabyCenter really disturbed me. Apparently there was a study done on a group of children with eczema where one half the group took a diluted bleach bath and the other half took a placebo bath. They claim that the bleach baths really helped to reduce the skin outbreaks and I do believe the point they make about how the bleach kills the bacteria that causes more outbreaks. However, it seems horribly wrong to me to soak your child in bleach, no matter how small the amount.

We live in a house with hardly any chemicals. I make all my daily cleansers out of natural ingredients and buy a few others from Whole Foods to eliminate as many harmful chemicals as possible. I do also have some products in the house (and locked away up high) such as Resolve for the many messes my son makes and bleach for the huge task of eliminating germs and viruses when needed, or the get rid of the mold that grows so often in our bathroom since it's the only thing that kills it dead. But I do hate having these products around as it is.

I made the mistake a few weeks back of bleaching the bathroom without a mask and I inhaled far too many fumes. The next day I suffered from slight chemical poisoning. Granted, I had myself a large dose of bleach to directly inhale, but nonetheless, suffered from this chemical. Hence the reason I hate having this product around, just in case. I also have made the mistake in the past of getting it on my skin and feeling burning and itchy for the rest of that day. Again, that was full strength.

Maybe it is from my experiences that I am so wearing of this product and feel wrong to ever let my sons naked body soak in a tub which contains any trace amount of it. I thank the gods he doesn't have this skin condition of eczema, but I don't know if I'd be able to get myself to do it if he had it.
