This might possibly be my favorite book yet from this 30 Days of Books. I had a lot of fun with the art, the story, everything. It has such a Tim Burton feel I had to do a double take on the author. 

I always get into the books with the kids, but this one I decided to go all out with my character voices. My son had me rolling in laughter because right when I start in with the "voice" of Skelly, he says, "Wow, Skelly has a really cute voice".  He commented on a few more characters as well. I thought it was adorable that he seemed to think these were just the voices of the characters. He had me read it again right after. 

Thankfully, this story is short and sweet because my better voices take quite a toll on my throat. I highly recommend this book, and it looks like it has a sequel as well.

I see the interesting twist the author put on the classic tale, but I am not fully impressed. I would have liked it a little more if she had done her own thing instead. I enjoyed this story. I thought it was set up like a typical children's book. You kind of guess what is going to happen, but then again you don't. There is a short and simple lesson about not underestimating someone, knowing strength is more than muscle, and the important effect of teamwork. However, the problem for us was the story stumped my 5 year old because he couldn't figure out why they wouldn't just do the simple solution. His idea was far more brilliant than the one in the book.... but I guess the simple solution wouldn't make a silly story now would it?

I Spy books are great for all ages, in my opinion. Even I enjoy looking for the hidden objects within the pages. The smaller ones can usually find the objects as well if you read the words to them. My son is 5 now, and he has been a major I Spy fan for at least the last 3 years. Now, he reads a little and helps his sister (2 1/2) find the hidden objects as well. 

This book has a a spooky theme going on in each page of riddles and searches. We keep all our Halloween books in our Halloween decorations box that comes out October 1st every year. (Same thing applies to our Christmas collection) So, seeing these Halloween books are a special treat. My son was so thrilled to see this book when we brought the box out. What's For Dinner Wednesday Week 113

  Fresh Bacon Avocado Pizza

Pizza is usually a kid favorite even though mom cringes at the though of the greasy slices filling their babies tummies. Making your own pizza at home is a great way to cut the fat and calories, plus, you will know exactly where the ingredients you are consuming came from. Homemade pizza is also a great options for letting the little ones help, creating a bonding and learning experience for everyone involved. 

Ingredients Needed
1 Boboli 12 inch pizza crust (or your fave crust, or homemade crust)
1/4 - 1/2 cup pizza sauce (use more or less to your liking)
1 12-16 oz package shredded mozarella
1 large beefsteak or heirloom tomato
1 avocado
1/2 lb fave bacon

Supplies Needed
cutting board
sharp knife
frying pan
tongs
pizza stone or large cookie sheet
spoon

Directions
1) Preheat oven according to the pizza crust package. Usually 450 degrees.
2) Use the pan and tongs to fry the bacon and set aside.
3) While bacon is cooling, slice the tomato and avocado.
4) Chop bacon into crumbs.
5) Open pizza crust package and add pizza sauce to top, spreading with the spoon.
6) Sprinkle the cheese evenly over the sauce.
7) Top pizza with the tomato and avocado slices, and chopped bacon.
8) On pre-heated pizza stone or large cookie sheet, bake according to pizza crust package. Usually about 10 minutes.

I Ran into Captain Obvious Today

I only had to walk around the corner. Two blocks really. I didn't pop my 2 year old in the stroller knowing it wasn't too long of an adventure. We crossed the street, picked up my son from preschool, and off we went to the market to pick something up.

When we came to the busy intersection, we all stopped to wait for the signal to cross the street. Right when the light flashed for us to cross, my son dropped the papers out of his homework folder. Well, that was also the moment a breeze came through, taking his papers with it. Queue son crying. When one paper flew far out into the street, he let out a loud, very fearful scream. My daughter (who's hand I was still holding and couldn't let go of to catch the papers) felt his intense emotion over losing his papers and started to cry herself.

So, there was the picture. Scurrying across the street, a kid on each hand, both crying, a water bottle hanging from the fingers of one hand, two bags on the other, my son's papers jammed quickly back into his folder, and me trying to calm them both down. That's when Captain Obvious passed by me and turned around to say, "You've got your hands full!".

Picture Perfect Right?

 Doesn't this picture look nice? It looks like a Mom sitting down to relax with a good book and a glass of wine. Good for her, she deserves it. What a great way to unwind after a long day of work, play, two kids, etc. Something we all wish we could do more often right?

The truth behind this photo is a bit more warped than that. Sadly, the truth is, I sat there forcing down a glass of wine (as I hate the taste) in an effort to alleviate the headache I almost always get after a day at work. I turned on my Kindle and sat there staring at the same page, continually trying to read it. 

However, instead of reading, what occurred was my four year old telling me stories about his video game, my 21 month old trying to sit on my lap, standing in my light, and talking all about pee pee (we are potty training). Every 3 minutes one of them was thirsty, needed a snack, needed help getting something, or got hurt.

And that page turned back to the screen saver, as I set it down, unread. 

But the picture looks nice, doesn't it?

How I Caught a Nap After Work

 Just being able to knock out for 5 minutes when I get home from work can completely re-energize me for the rest of the evening. Typically, on the days that I work, the Husband works right after. So, how in the world am I going to get that quick nap I need, while I have the kids to myself?

The recipe calls for a few of the parenting "no-no's", some technology, and some type of reverse psychology. 

These are the steps I took this afternoon after I came home and gave them a ton of fun, laughter and love. First, I put on the TV. Nick JR so at least it's educational. I made sure they had food and drink. I told my 4 year old son he can play with his Nintendo DS, or Angry Birds on my phone if he wishes. Then I took my 21 month old daughter into my bed and proceeded to cuddle her until she just couldn't take it anymore and whined and complained to get away. Normally, my daughter is quite the cuddle bug. However, that's when it is on HER terms. I cuddled her so much she got extremely annoyed with me and left the room.... she was so annoyed she left me alone long enough to catch my quick nap. 

Feeling a new energy bubbling up inside me and feeling like I can easily tackle the rest of the day I woke up and went about everything as usual. No yelling, no door closing, no whining.

The Times Have Definitely Changed

I sit down with my 4 year old son almost every day and go through what we call "homework". A collection of educational books, flash cards, games, and activities that we do aside from his regular preschool work. We added a couple new pieces to this collection over the holidays and today was the first time we tried them out. 

We were going through some new flashcards, and things were running very smooth. That is, right up until we got to one with a picture of a written letter and envelope. My son was completely stumped. The closest guess he had was simply, paper. 

No doubt technology has improved a great deal this last century. I find it amazing though how much things have changed from my own childhood to his. Only a 20 year difference. I gave him a little (Google searched) quiz. My generations typewriter.... "a computer.... with paper in it". A VCR... "a computer". A record..."a CD". When I mentioned CD's are shiny and silver he says, "Then they must be black CD's".

Computers do a lot, and help us in many beneficial ways. I do not wish them to go away. My only concern in all this would be the day computers take over to the point that kids no longer learn how to hand write, on real paper. I'm sure in just another year or two he will know what a handwritten letter is. But for now, this four year old thinks everything is a computer.

Affording Disneyland

 The Happiest Place on Earth... if you can afford it. Disneyland is a fun filled place created to entertain children of all ages, and that it has for the last 56 years. However, as the cost of living has gone up dramatically since it's opening, the price of a ticket has gone up even more than that. 

I can't really go back and say how I remember when the price of a ticket was cheap and affordable. Up until I was 18, a family member would always be the one taking us and paying for the tickets. I do remember the tickets being about $65, and that price also isn't quite as harsh when you are a youngster without children, and barely any bills. 

Right now the price of a one day one park ticket is $81. If you want to "park hop" between both Disneyland and California Adventure that'll set you back $105. As a young couple with two young children, we don't really have a lot of extra spending cash on hand. Going to Disneyland can set us back over $300 a visit on tickets alone. But as a Mom, I really want to give my kids the joy of visiting this happy place. 

I came up with a brilliant idea. This past Christmas I got the idea that the kids have too many toys as is. We try to raise them not to be too materialistic, and I was hoping there would be a great way to get through the holidays without a big, new shipment of toys to clutter the already small house. That idea came to me just in time. 

Realizing how much we enjoy Disneyland, and how we don't go often due to lack of funds, we decided to ask everyone that instead of gifts, would they please give us Disney giftcards. It was fantastic. We have two large families and when everyone applied the same amount they would have spent anyway, to a Disney giftcard, we came out with enough money to buy the So Cal Select passes we wanted. 

The passes are only $199 a piece, and they are park hoppers, so two visits and you start saving money. The downside some might see with those passes (the cheapest they offer) block out all weekends, holidays, and summer. The bright side to us.... we really don't like going during those busy times anyway. 

It worked out perfectly and allowed us the chance to afford going to Disneyland as a family at least a couple times this year. We are very blessed and happy. And we also do not have a big, new shipment of toys cluttering the house. Win/Win!
