Another Mohawk!

It was time for another haircut for my son this month and we both agreed that since it was getting warmer we should give him another Mohawk, like he had last summer. We both think he looks absolutely adorable with it, so we did.

He was pretty easy going about the whole thing, which is about the same as he was last year. He cried at first, but that was only due o the fact that he wanted to play with the comb and Daddy as using it. Once he got over that, he quickly became bored with the whole thing and began investigating the various places on one's face that a finger will fit into. He found a few good ones. The top of the head went petty smooth and the back just took a little longer. My husband was so concerned with having it look perfect, he seemed to forget he was cutting the hair of a small toddler. However, I am pleased to announce we all made it out alive, no fighting, no crying, and an adorable baby Mohawk. The cutest part was when the buzzer was on the back of our son's head it tickled him and he kept giggling.

There are not many people in our life at all that agree with the way we style our own son's hair. That is something that doesn't bother my husband or myself one bit. We have received all sorts of negative looks and comments from people who just can't get past the image of what they think is wrong. It's OK with us really, we do what we want at this point. But even now and for sure later, when our son says he doesn't want or like something we listen. The biggest struggle of having a child for us certainly has to be the fact that everyone adds their two cents on what they think is right for the way we raise our children. I bite my tongue every time because I understand they do not think outside the box like we do and saying something in return would only cause unnecessary drama. I am proud of the way we raise our son and I am highly confident that as he grows up everyone will be blown away at the wonderful child and man he turns into. I feel that by raising him with love and respect for himself and all things will make him the perfect kind of person in this world. Other people will still be negative and not know how to accept something out of the ordinary. I will always choose to be in the wonderful presence of my children over anyone else in my life. For I am making them the kind of people I choose to be surrounded by.

Sweet Boy!

Today has been an absolute joy with my son! He has been to sweet and loving and pleasant to deal with all day.

We started our day out with a long walk to WIC. It's about 2 to 2 1/2 miles away, and a great way to get some exercise for myself. He was so peaceful on the way over, enjoying watching the world from his stroller and saying "Hi" to every truck and bus he saw.

When we got to WIC he continued to be just as wonderful. He got out of his stroller and played with the toys they have there. One other toddler was in the area and the pregnant mother of this 15 month oldish child absolutely refused to let her son anywhere near touching distance to my son. I guess a while back I would have though it was odd, but I have come to learn that at least here in LA, no one lets their children get to know anyone Else's kids. Is it there germ factor? Is it because we are a different race than they are? Is it because they just think if their child touches mine I would get upset? Who really knows? What I do know is that it is really a sad thing. These poor children just want to play and make friends and mommy always tells them no, that they are bad, and that they should get away and stay away. It's no wonder why we have people in this world that cannot communicate, do not have people skills, and have so many issues with touching someone else. It's because there are so many mothers out there like that, teaching their child that other kids and people are bad and scary. They aren't going to learn how to deal with people, and that could really hurt them. They are going to grow up and feel that if someone they don't know sits down next to them and their legs slightly touch, that they should get away as quickly as possible and avoid all human touch. It's hurting humans so much when they act that way. We need human touch and love.

Beyond my rant, after WIC, and a peaceful WIC visit at that, we walked the few extra blocks to my husband's Grandparents house where we met with him. He rode the bike over. The visit there was the same as always. They don't listen to anything we say about ourselves or our son. They try to override what we tell our son he can and cannot do. They tell us how long THEY think WE should wait to have another, though I thinks it's likely they don't want us to have anymore kids at all. His Grandma played with our Son outside and they had a wonderful time. Our son was again very pleasant the whole time.

I walked back home while my son and husband rode the bike home. Our son loves the bike. He was very good on the trip home and when we arrived home he went right to bed. I couldn't get over how wonderful he had been.

After he awoke, my husband left to go see a movie with his friends and our son and I spent some time together making Daddy's Father's Day gift. He had a blast and got paint all over the place. After a quick bath and his first very fun shower he was good as new again and ready for more of this wonderfully tempered day. He played alone while I watched a little TV to wind down from the day and then when Daddy got home, they both went to lie down in our bed together and he is stilled cuddled up next to Daddy sleeping peacefully. His first time falling asleep like that as well. What a week of firsts!

Ultimately, I believe we will be going to the Grandparents this Sunday. I'm thinking since everyone will be there, and since they have all been bugging us about going to Tahoe next month, that it may be a great time to open up about the surrogacy, and the truth as to why we cannot go.

The Potty!

I bought our son a small black potty from Ikea about 3 months ago. He has since shown the signs he is ready for potty training such as being aware of when he pees, removing his diaper when he poops, and going longer periods of time without actually peeing (control his urge). I personally have been a little lazy about it. I guess I just didn't know where to begin. I have usually let him go "nakey" right before bath time since he was a little baby. I feel naked time is very important. Since I bought the potty, during naked time I would pull it out and set it down, informing him that when he had to go pee pee he should go in the potty.

He almost always sits on it right away, and he runs to play and then will come back to sit some more. As of today he hadn't yet done any pee pee in the thing, so I was wondering what step I need to take to get him started in the potty trained direction.

I must have already taken that step with what I did because tonight after nakey time had begun, and he sat on the potty, we both went about our routines. I was sitting on the couch when I notice he stood up from the potty, turned around, and proceeded to pee pee right into the potty until he was done. YAY!

I congratulated him, shrieked with excitement and grabbed the camera. He pulled out his new word "Cheese" and gave me a huge smile while I snapped the photo. Then he stuck his hand in the potty. HA HA! It was OK because I taught him to wash his hands after going pee pee anyway. My son has made this huge milestone, without any force, and in his own time! I'm so happy. I hope he continues to do this.

Loving us, Flaws and All.

It is a beautiful, yet disturbing thing when you toddler son sits on your lap, smiling his sweet smile while he proceeds to point to various spots on my face and pronounce that I have "owies", reminding me that I have adult acne.

But the beauty of it is that he loves me, and all of me. No matter what I look like, sound like, smell like, or even act like. He always loves me unconditionally and I am beautiful in his eyes. That makes me feel beautiful. Inside and out.

What is sad, is how people can not appreciate that about their children. People do not feel that way themselves, then cause their own children to stop feeling that way. That leaves us in a world filled with people who look down on others for the way they look, act, think, feel. It causes people to feel fat, ugly, inadequate, and inappropriate. It's a horrible way to live, why can't we all just see the true beauty in one another and live peacefully?

About that TV...

Well I just posted a blog yesterday about the TV. And today I have more to say about it.

I spent 8 hours next door cleaning my brother-in-laws apartment today. I came back for lunch, not only to re-energize myself, but to check up on my son who was being looked after by my husband.

Well, more like being looked after by the television! He had been watching it all day, torn up the house and had poop. Oh yeah, he hadn't eaten either. Gosh, what was my husband doing? Well, he was on the computer of course. Maybe he thinks that is what I do all day because he always sees me at the desk. What he doesn't realize is that I am always paying close attention to all my sons needs, and I listen to him very well. Granted, I spend more time with him than anyone else, and I "know" his language. But still, here I was working hard to make extra money and my job at home wasn't being taken over. That adds stress.

My husband kinda got the hint and insisted on making his lunch that I had started. I changed my son, I set up his lunch, I came back and cleaned him up, and I then put him to nap also. And mu husband the whole time? Computer games.

Once my son was asleep I went back to do more. My brother -in-law is very filthy and it took my 8 hours to do everything excluding the kitchen. So when I returned a few times toward the end of my "shift" I was grateful to find my husband had in fact washed the dishes in the sink like I asked him. But my son had watched TV ALL DAY LONG. My husband used it as a babysitter today. I am so thankful that he doesn't have to watch my son any more than once a week while I clean because then my son would become that kid I refuse to have.

The Boob Tube

Letting your children watch TV is a huge argument that seems to have a 50/50 vote going for it. Half of Moms think that their kids should be doing real life educational things rather than watching any TV... while the other half don't mind TV or even feel it helps their children learn. I am one who feels that as with all things, moderation is what matters. I have been guilty of letting my son watch TV all day long, and I have also spent days where neither of us watch any TV at all. Maybe that is one extreme to the next, but what I truly feel is as long as TV benefits him, and he spends more time in real life than watching TV, then all is fine with me.

I have been sitting down watching Noggin with my son and heard him say things that no one has ever taught him. I have seen him do what they were doing on TV. I am pretty strict about only letting him watch Noggin but he will catch other shows we watch here and there. But he has seen animals he recognizes and then he tells me what sound they make without me prompting. He dances along with Yo Gabba Gabba at the right time. He gets so thrilled when his favorite shows come on. Just a couple days ago he surprised us by pointing out "Wowwow" was on. Wow Wow Wubbzy is his favorite show. Daddy got him a Wubbzy doll last Christmas and he grabs it and announces who he is holding. It brings me joy that even though we have always called him Wubbzy, he calls him Wow Wow. I think that is great.

The thing is, I do not expect my son never to watch TV. I have used it as a baby sitter also, but not for a long period of time. Sometimes a Mom needs to chill out, or do something that you shouldn't have a little one running around behind you. The TV can give you that opportunity, just don't abuse it. Given the fact that he mimics what he sees, I do not want him watching certain shows or stations. And further more, I know that I personally do not overuse the TV. I have shows that I think are great, like LOST, and I won't miss them for anything. But I do not spend my life in front of the TV. I do not expect my son never to watch TV in his life, so why not understand how it works now? I have taught my son there are times when the TV needs to stay off. He is good about it now, he even turns it off when I say bedtime and then he proceeds to walk himself to bed and go right to sleep. I teach him with love, and avoid anger as much as possible. I respect that he is his own person and I look out for what is best for his health. I will never tell him how to act or speak, so long as he does them with respect for others. I will cherish who he is as a person and never tell him his true desires are worthless and pointless. Even if they are to me, doesn't mean they are to him. I have seen the product of that type of parenting, and it is not pretty.
