Bad Epidural?

It's been 6 weeks now since my daughter was born. My back still hurts at the epidural site. I'm a little worried.

When I had my son, everything went beautifully with the epidural. I never experienced one bad thing from having it done. Just awesome pain relief at a time when I couldn't get a hold of myself.

This last time (just like with my son) I didn't WANT to get an epidural. In fact, I told myself, if I got the hospital and they told me I was at 8, that I wouldn't get one. I was 8 ½ when I got there, and hadn't yet experienced the pain I did with my son. I was in great shape and I felt confident I could handle the remaining labor and delivery.

My experience with hospitals (both times) are horrid, mainly due to my natural “midwife” take on childbirth, and even parenting for that matter. I wanted a midwife real bad this time around, but we just couldn't afford it :(. Anyway, the hospital experience sucks, but it is a whole entire blog worth of vents which I will currently refrain from. The main point here is, once they feel they need to make you sit still, on your back, because it is “unsafe to move anymore” that's when pain sets in. I was great while walking and moving. As soon as I sat still, around 9 cm, pain literally doubled, if not more. I got worried quick about the pain intensifying to the extreme I (thought) I felt with my son, and knowing there was only one centimeter to go made the decision a little harder. However, that one centimeter could be hours long and I had to make an immediate choice to get an epidural, so I went for it.

While I was getting it, a contraction came on, and something made it all go into my back for some reason. Made my back stiffen so bad, the doctor yelled at me not to move. Well, even though I couldn't control what happened, I think I might be suffering for it. For quite a few days after, I felt a sharp pain in the site of the epidural, and I could not lie on my back or even put pressure on it. It has gotten better since, but I still feel it now. I still can't lie on my back on anything firm. I feel a sharp pinch pain. Even if I poke the area I will feel pain. Considering I never had a side effect with my son, I worry a little that the whole spasm thing somehow messed me up. I hope I can still get a massage because I really need one. I will talk to my doctor about it, and see whoever I need to see, in order to figure it out. One more reason though, why I am thankful I feel complete and won't be having anymore kids.

What is your epidural story, if you've had one?

Great balance! For me I feel life goes by way to fast, I can enjoy each moment with them and budget a little tighter, or make a lot of money and hope they will be around to enjoy it with me when I have time! I decided to stay and enjoy each moment! Thanks for the comments zmansfam!! There are so many different choices that people can make when it comes to staying at home or working. Families just need to make the best choice that works for them.

I had a botched epidural with my daughter. Only half of my body went numb and I kept telling them and they didn't believe me. Finally they agreed to give me another one which worked but it was an awful experience all around. I'd like to deliver this baby naturally and have been reading up on hypnobirthing and the like but am nervous that the dcotors will convince me otherwise.

Wow that sounds awful! I'm really sorry that's still bothering your back! I didn't use an epidural. I'm actually more scared of pain medicine like that than I am of the actual pain. I didn't even take my pain medicine after I got my wisdom teeth removed (I was out for the procedure, though). I know that's so weird. It's so hard to explain to people. I'm not even all super gung-ho natural childbirth. I'm just scared of the pain medicine! haha

I don't know where you live or what's available in your area, but I used a certified nurse-midwife in a hospital & it was actually cheaper than if I'd used an OB. But I'm in an area that has 5 nurse-midwives total between 2 hospitals. They let me walk around & move how I wanted to straight up until it was time to push. I can't imagine if they had tried to make me sit down & not move. That definitely would've made the pain so much more intense! No wonder you asked for an epidural!

What matters is that you have a healthy baby! We heal from the other stuff. I had a weird healing situation in regards to my stitches from where I tore. People probably don't want to hear about that, but it was CRAZY & I ended up having to get a shot like they do with a wart when I was 6 weeks out. (In my lady business!!!) That was really painful! I'll definitely wait a little while before trying for baby #2...

I had c-sections with all three children. I had to have an emergency one with my eldest. They induced labor early Wed morning and she was not born until 1:52 that Friday. I had 3 needles in my back that Thursday night. The first two were epidurals that didnt work and the second was a saddle block that failed as well! Boy they feel weird going in,dont they?
I had to be put under for my child to be born and my husband couldnt attend. It was a yucky situation all the way round. The other two times were fantastic though!
Have you spoken to your doctor about it? Sorry for your pain.

I'm so sorry to hear about the epidural. I haven't had one myself but I've always been scared of the huge needle. I hope it starts feeling better. I would love to stay updated!

I had an epidural with my youngest son. They ruptured my water so that they could do internal monitoring - because I was delivering VBAC- the pain was so intense I went with the epidural.
He had trouble latching on and it became such a problem they wanted to try a bottle, then try IV feeding. I didn't let that happen.
It turned out ok - but I associate the epidural with problems. And yes the hospital is a nightmare - robbing women & babies of the kind of births they should have.
According to the WHO only 10% of all births require medical intervention. Now think of all the births you know of - nearly all of them become some type of medical procedure.
I'm 8 days over due now and have a midwife who is working hard to get me the kind of birth I want even though it has to be in a hospital due to my VBAC status. I'm avoiding all interventions, but only have until 42 weeks which is Tuesday before there will be a light pit drip and if that doesn't work rupturing my water. Getting scared I have done everything natural thus far for my baby's sake. Crossing fingers - can't wait to meet her :)
