Sick Toddler

Having a sick toddler is no fun, any parent will tell you the same. I've been fortunate enough that my son hasn't really been sick in his life. Apart from two times in which he got the sniffles this would be is first sickness, and even so it's not that bad.

Three days in and two pukes per day I have picked up a few tips on how to make life with a sick toddler a little easier. I know this is so minor in comparison to some horrible viruses that can go around, but I still learned a few things. In fact as I type this I am still figuring he isn't over this illness and more drama and puke could lie ahead. I pry to the gods not of course, but I will hang on and endure what comes.

While you kids are sick, line their beds if you haven't already with a waterproof mattress pad or a trash bag. Although, after one puking on the mattress pad you might need a trash bag anyway, so make sure to have a few on hand.

Lots of laundry soap and bleach will be needed. You are going to end up doing a great deal of laundry as everything in your house becomes drenched in vomit. Luckily for you it comes at separate times in smaller amounts. Imagine all of their puke all together at once.... EW!

Some kids do have an attachment to a certain blanket or stuffed animal. I imagine that can make it very difficult to let go of during this time of need they will have, but if it's puke covered it clearly needs to separate from your child for a little while. If you have a child like mine who isn't attached to anything really then do yourself a favor and remove all the harder to wash items like teddy bears, from a 2 foot circle around them. You'll thank yourself much later.

Get out a large pan and lug it around the house with you and your child. Especially if you have a child too young to even know when it is coming, once you hear that telltale sign, or see it coming out, grab the pot from next to you and catch as much as possible. It will reduce laundry, save cleaning overall, and can easily be dumped into the toilet.

Keep Lysol and bleach on hand to kill germs on anything they com in contact with to reduce the risk of spreading the virus as much as possible. Wash the big pot with really hot soapy water, really well. Spray the beds, blankets, and door handles with Lysol. Add just a dash of bleach to the sink and laundry if you can.

Keep the fluids going. I'm sure I don't have to remind anyone of this but sometimes kids don;t like consuming much when they feel sick. Many kids do not like the taste of Pedialyte so try mixing it with juice and water to somewhat conceal it's flavor. Or try smart water, which has electrolytes in it. If you child can handle milk and dairy try giving pediasure to help with nutrients. There is the BRAT diet to follow also. Banana, rice, applesauce, toast. My son only liked the toast and that's all he consumed today. Try not to worry about how much they eat. Focus on fluids and encourage them to eat whenever they want. Keep the foods simple and somewhat bland to not further upset their stomach. If you aren't sure about giving your child something or you suspect dehydration, please consult your pediatrician.

Remember they will get through this flu, and pray that you will not be sick at the same time, but even if you are know what you have to do and try your best to stay calm and relax as much as possible. Being sick is not something toddler are used to and it can scare them. Be extra patient with them and their whining. Take time to cuddle them and make them feel secure. Stand by them when they get sick and show them your love.
