Chalk

It's one of the most simple inventions. It's cheap, it's natural, it's fun. It's CHALK! It's incredible how much we have gone through in the last year since my son started using the stuff. He'll take it in any form. We have a chalkboard in the house, and sidewalk out front. He has thin colored pieces, big fat colored pieces, crayon shaped ones, egg shaped ones, and a collection of small and broken pieces. Last year he began getting so into the stuff that our annual Christmas/Yule ornament purchase was a toddler bear drawing chalk art on a sidewalk.

Every morning that we have nice weather, I open up the whole house. The fresh air is not only healthy for us, but it smells and feels wonderful. I'm sure smog free country air is better, but we have to deal with what we have now. When I do this, my son always asks to go play chalk outside. It's such a simple thing to sit on the front porch, soaking up the beautiful morning sun, watching him create, imagine, play, and explore. I myself, also love chalk, as a substance. Powered is best, but I still very much enjoy drawing with formed sticks of the stuff. We have enough colors to draw just about anything. My art (which I've mentioned, drawing is not my skill) usually consists of suns, moons, rainbows, and the occasional cat. My son likes to trace himself and the bugs on the ground. We just got some of that 3d chalk and need to explore with that a little.

Bottom line though, it's really a vital childhood activity, to play with chalk. While you sit there with your kids you can even get things done. Read a book or magazine, catch up on email if you have a laptop, return a phone call, or best of all, get chalky with them and make sidewalk art.
